What's involved
Here's exactly what's involved — and how your own named accountant handles each part for you.
VAT returns and Making Tax Digital, end to end
VAT is one of the easiest taxes to get wrong and one of the most costly when you do. We take care of the whole cycle — keeping the digital records, preparing each return, checking it and filing it on time.
Do you need to register for VAT?
You must register once your taxable turnover crosses the threshold on a rolling 12-month basis, but in some cases registering voluntarily before that point makes sense. We monitor your turnover so you register at the right time, neither late nor unnecessarily early.
Getting the rates and the scheme right
Not everything you sell is necessarily taxed at the standard rate, and applying the wrong rate is a common and expensive mistake. We make sure each supply is treated correctly across the full range of VAT rates.
Making Tax Digital is mandatory for VAT
Making Tax Digital for VAT has applied to all VAT-registered businesses since April 2022. That means keeping digital records and filing through MTD-compatible software — paper records and manual submissions are no longer allowed.
VAT return deadlines
Most businesses file VAT returns quarterly. The return and any payment are due one month and seven days after the period ends, and we make sure both are dealt with comfortably ahead of time.
Construction, imports and EU sales
Some sectors and transactions need special handling. If you work in construction, the VAT domestic reverse charge applies to most CIS services and changes how VAT is accounted for between contractors and subcontractors — we deal with this routinely.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
You must register once your taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 on a rolling 12-month basis, the threshold in place since 1 April 2024. Some businesses also choose to register voluntarily below that level. We monitor your turnover so you register at exactly the right time.
